Know the Warning Signs of a Heart Attack

A heart attack happens when blood flow to a part of the heart is suddenly blocked. Acting fast can save heart muscle — and life. Learn the common warning signs.

Chest discomfort: pressure, tightness, heaviness or pain in the centre of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or comes and goes.

Pain spreading to the arm(s), shoulder, neck, jaw or back.

Shortness of breath, with or without chest discomfort.

Cold sweat, nausea, unusual tiredness, or light-headedness.

Women, older adults and people with diabetes may have subtler signs, such as unusual fatigue or breathlessness, without classic chest pain.

What to do: Do not wait. Call for emergency help immediately and get to a hospital with cardiac facilities. Early treatment, within the first hours, makes a major difference.
